All Central Heating Systems are usually drained at some time or another, usually to rectify any defects that exist within the system. It can be carried out by the homeowner, however if they are not confident enough to do it they should consider seeking expert advice from the professionals like Highgate Plumbers.

The drain cock is a small brass tap with a square head that can be turned with a spanner (and is from where the draining is done). It can deform if badly treated, i.e. constantly being open and closed. It is usually located close to the front door as a part of the pipes at that location. Nearly all radiators have a drain built onto the valve that is a small ribbed pipe that extends down to an angle so that a hose can be connected. Having found the drain (small ribbed pipe), put a container or something capable of catching water underneath the valve as when it is open it could put some water on the carpet. Connect a hose to the small ribbed pipe with a jubilee clip. Roll the hose into the garden or to an external drain, also, remembering that the water in the system is very dirty and then open the valve slowly allowing the water to flow out through the hose ensuring that there are no leaks. Once you are sure there is no water escaping you can then open the valve fully. The system contains a large amount of water. Check at your radiators with a bleed key, the sound of air means the system is empty but if water comes from the radiator bleed valves then close the valves and wait until the system has drained completely. A Highgate Plumber can carry out this job.

Note:

Drain cocks are usually fitted to a system and never touched. They can suffer from corrosion of the rubber washer which has the effects:

a). The rubber washer is stuck to the base blocking the opening. A usual cure is to tighten the valve as much as you can which should dislodge or disintegrate the washer allowing water to flow.

b). Washer is damaged so when the valve is tightened it leaks.
